Lady Oaks Basketball Holds Off IU-Southeast Grenadiers

Looking to improve on their 1-3 record, the Oakland City University women's basketball team hosted the 7-2 Grenadiers of Indiana University-Southeast.

After opening up a 21-11 lead after the opening quarter, the Oaks held a 36-31 advantage at the halftime break. OCU was outscored 28-27 in the third period, but managed to hold on to win 77-75.

Senior Aricka Prentice led all scorers in the game, posting 20 points on 7-10 shooting, including 2-5 from three point range, while knocking down all four of her foul shots. Kiare Young, making her first collegiate start, tallied 14 points and four steals, while Maddie Ubelhor scored a dozen, while handing out four assists and blocking three shots. Emma Lander came off the bench to score 10 points, while joining Xerena Tompkins with nine rebounds each.

Baylee Krueger paced the Grenadiers, scoring 15 points on 5-9 shooting, while picking up four steals. Madi Woods added 13 points, followed by a 12 point, 11 rebound effort off the bench from Kelsi Scott. Ariana Sandefur also scored 12 counters, as each team had four double figure scorers.

For the game, OCU shot 27-71 (38.0%) from the field, including 6-21 (28.6%) from three point range. IUS made 26-69 (37.7%) of their shot attempts, connecting on just 2-15 (13.3%) from beyond the arc. The Oaks made 17-19 (89.5%) of their free throw attempts, compared to 21-28 (75.0%) for the Grenadiers.

The Oaks handed out 17 assists, one more than the visitors, while losing the turnover battle 22-15. OCU managed to outrebound IUS 48-41, including a 14-12 edge on the offensive glass. Each team picked up 14 steals in the contest, while OCU's eight blocked shots was three more than their opponents.

Next up for OCU is a Saturday double header against the Mavericks of Ohio State University-Mansfield. The Mighty Oaks tip off in the Johnson Center at 3:00, followed by the Lady Oaks at 5:00.
