The Oakland City University women's basketball team earned their second win of the season, holding off the Flames of Welch College, 62-53, in the Johnson Center. After leading 36-27 at halftime, the Oaks built their lead up to 18 points midway through the third period, but were unable to sustain the separation as the Flames fought until the end.
Reanne Kietlinski led the Oaks in scoring, posting 14 points, on 4-8 shooting, while making all four of her free throws.
Malia Schmittler had a double-double, scoring 13 points and hauling in 13 missed shots, while
Kiare Young added 12 counters in the win.
Avery Jones paced the Flames, with 18 points and 13 rebounds, both game highs, while Abby Bragg added 11 counters, five assists and five steals. Ashleigh Sage chipped in with six points, nine boards, and five blocked shots for Welch.
As a team, OCU made 21-62 (33.9%) from the field, going 5-26 (19.2%) from three point range. The Flames connected on 19-60 (31.7%) of their shot attempts, making 4-15 (26.7%) from beyond the arc. The Oaks scored on 15-17 (88.2%) from the charity stripe, compared to 11-14 (78.6%) for the visitors from Nashville, Tennessee.
OCU handed out 16 assists while turning the ball over 18 times, while the Flames had 10 assists and 17 turnovers.
Next up for the Lady Oaks will be a pair of road games in Florida, as they take on Embry-Riddle University on Wednesday, November 27, followed by a clash with Florida Tech on Saturday, November 30. Wednesday's game in scheduled to tip off at 6:00 pm eastern time, while Saturday is set for 1:00 pm.
