After the Mighty Oaks saw their first two series canceled due to the weather, Oakland City was able to open the 2019 season, hosting the Trailblazers of Ohio Christian University for a doubleheader.
After a strong pitching performance in game one that saw junior
Valerie Lewis throw a complete game, allowing three runs, neither of which were earned, scattering six hits and four walks, while striking out five. However the Oaks were unable to get any runs on the board, losing 2-0.
Sophomore
Lauren Stone went 3-3 at the plate, with two singles and a double, while
McKendree Ward reached on a single as a pinch hitter in her first collegiate at-bat. Lewis and freshman
Demi Croak each had a single in three at-bats in the loss.
Game two saw junior Caitlyn Huff start in the circle for the Oaks, eventually pitching a total of 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs, five of which were earned, on nine hits and four walks, while striking out two. Stone pitched in relief, allowing three runs, all earned, on five hits with a strikeout.
The Oakland City bats were more effective in the nightcap, as the Mighty Oaks scored five runs, but lost 10-5. Lewis and Huff each had two hits in three at-bats, with Huff connecting on a double to deep center field to go with two runs batted in, while Lewis scored a run.
Reagan Hensley, sophomore catcher, went 2-4 at the plate, scoring a run, while
Anna Orsburn, junior outfielder, went 1-3 with a run scored.
Amanda Craig, junior outfielder, went 1-2 with a walk, while Stone was 1-3 with two runs scored.
Oakland City University will square off against Ohio Christian again tomorrow, with a game time of 1:00 pm.
