Oakland City, IN - In the 2021-22 Oakland City University women's basketball home opener, the Oaks faced the Phoenix of Cumberland University. After a total of 11 ties and nine lead changes, the Mighty Oaks came out on the short end of a 71-69 final score, falling to 0-2 on the season.
The Oaks built their biggest lead early, pulling ahead by seven points three minutes into the first quarter, while Cumberland held their largest lead, of four points, with 3:35 left in the game.
Davinique Campbell led the way for OCU in her first game in the Johnson Center, scoring 14 points to go with a game high 16 rebounds. Emily Hope also tallied 14 counters, matched by
Marissa Austin off the bench.
Tabby Klem added six points while grabbing 10 boards.
Jana Claire Swafford scored a game high 18 points to lead the Phoenix, followed by 16 points and 11 rebounds from Alaina Rongos. Breon Oldham came off the bench to tally 10 points and six rebounds.
As a team, the Oaks made 20-66 (30.3%) of their shot attempts, including 6-20 (30.0%) from three points range. The Phoenix connected on 22-66 (33.3%) from the field, going 6-17 (35.3%) from beyond the arc. OCU made 23-32 (71.9%) from the foul line, compared to 21-38 (55.3%) for the visiting Cumberland University.
Oakland City held a slim 53-52 rebounding edge, despite trailing 21-20 on the offensive boards. The Oaks handed out 13 assists, compared to nine for Cumberland, while both teams turned the ball over 21 times.
The Oaks will be back in action against the Bearcats of Brescia University on Tuesday, November 9, tipping off at 5:30 pm.
