The Lady Oaks travelled to West Virginia on Thursday, October 6 to face West Virginia Institute of Technology in a midweek conference match. They were successful with maintaining their five-game win streak with a 2-1 win.
The Lady Oaks dominated the first half creating multiple goal scoring opportunities, but it took until the 53
rd minute for the Lady Oaks to find a breakthrough.
Just under ten minutes into the second half, West Virginia had an unsuccessful attack.
Kassidy Elkin retrieved the ball in the box and punted it to the middle of the field where
Claudia Melgar won the ball from a defender and took it out wide. Melgar found
Rhiannon O'Looney on the right wing where she carried it to the right side of the box and laid it back to Melgar who one touch shot it, lobbing the keeper and hitting the back of the net, making it 1-0.
West Virginia attempted a through ball and
Nara Santos stepped to intercept and passed the ball to
Alana Doherty in midfield. Doherty turned her defender and picked out a through ball to O'Looney's feet. O'Looney then ran half the pitch into the box and shot which was blocked by the keeper. It fell outside the box to
Kennedy Hospelhorn who took a first time power shot that took a deflection off the defender and went bottom left, making it 2-0.
On their attack, West Virginia found their left winger and played a dangerous ball into the box where their striker took a shot that was deflected off a Mighty Oak defender, resulting in a penalty kick. Elkin anticipated the direction of the kick, but was unfortunate to not save the bottom left shot, making it 2-1.
