The Mighty Oaks put an end to their back to back losses by defeating Midway University 3-1 away on Saturday, October 15.
Midway were the first to score in this affair when their goal came in the 13
th minute. Midway had a corner kick played to the six yard box that was punched out by
Kassidy Elkin. The ball was retrieved by Midway and sent out to the left wing where
Claudia Melgar pressured high making the attacker retreat. The attacker was still able to produce a cross to the top of the box where the forward headed the ball along to the striker who chested it and half volleyed the ball into the back of the net, making the score 1-0.
The Mighty Oaks were quick to retaliate with a goal of their own just under five minutes after conceding.
Madison Nicolas got fouled by the center circle resulting in a freekick that
Megan Knox took. Knox played the ball into the box where
Madison Ward was able to run onto the ball and head it into the bottom left corner of the net, making the score 1-1 at halftime. This was Knox's first assist of the season.
In the second half, the Mighty Oaks won the ball back from their counter attack and won a freekick behind the halfway line. Ward played a quick ball to Melgar up top where the ball bounced back to
Alana Doherty. Doherty found Melgar's feet who turned and found
Kennedy Hospelhorn open on the left wing. Hospelhorn crossed the ball into the middle which was poorly cleared to the edge of the box by a Midway defender. Melgar took advantage and first time hit the ball into the roof of the net leaving the keeper with no chance. This made the score 2-1.
Just over a minute later,
Nara Santos took a throw in to
Lauren Zirkelbach on the right hand side who found Nicolas' feet on the right wing. Nicolas dribbled past the defender and crossed the ball into the six yard box where Hospelhorn was able to take a touch and shoot the ball into the bottom left corner, making the score 3-1.
The Lady Oaks continued to dominate the game, but were unable to score any more goals as the game ended 3-1. The Lady Oaks had 22 shots with 13 on target while Elkin finished the game with two saves.
The Lady Oaks are on the road again on Thursday, October 20 when they face IU East at 5pm. GO MIGHTY OAKS!!
