Oakland City, IN – For the first home game in October, the Women's Volleyball team dedicated their game to all people battling breast cancer. October is the month of Breast Cancer Awareness. The Lady Oaks had some great support from the student section, majorly dressed in pink, on their way to a big 3-0 victory over Brescia University.
The Lady Oaks got off to a hot start playing against the Bearcats of Brescia. The first set was won by the score of 25-23. The second set was won by the same score and in the third and final set, the Oaks were convincing with a 25-19 victory of the set and therefore a solid 3-0 victory of the match.
Another victory for the volleyball team was the return of
Chloee Thomas to the court. Thomas had been out with an injury for the entire season up to this point.
On offense, the team of coach
Larry Hinshaw was helped a lot by
Laura Betsa (10),
Jazmyn Rodriquez (8) and
Malia Schmittler (7) who lead the team in kills.
Mariana Anastasiadi (18) and
Callie Foster (12) also played a big role, leading the team in assists.
On defense,
Laura Betsa,
Malia Schmittler and
Desheonna Foster all had three blocks.
Yianmarie Catala (12) and
Dunja Madjarevic (7) lead the team in digs.
The next match for the Women's Volleyball team will be another home event, as the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears travel to Oakland City on Friday, October 7 to play in the Johnson Center at 7:00 PM. The following day, Saturday October 8, there will be another home match for the Lady Oaks as they take on the University of Rio Grande at 11:00 AM.
