Softball Cruises through Pittsburgh

Oakland City, IN- On the road in Pittsburgh, the Mighty Oaks Softball team took 4 victories before hitting the road home. In two double headers, against Carlow (PA) and Point Park, the Softball team improved their record to 15-11 and 8-8 in River States Conference play.

In game one the Mighty Oaks took advantage in the 3rd inning by scoring 4 runs on hits by Gilpin, Goforth, Ghrist, and Wissel. Taking the 4-3 lead into the 4th inning. Before allowing 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th, the Mighty Oaks had 2 more runs cross the plate, increasing their lead to 6-3. The Mighty Oaks lead was never broken as the Mighty Oaks took game one with a score of 11-6. Emily Fitzwater went the entire 7 innings for the Mighty Oaks allowing 6 runs on 10 hits while striking out 4 batters. 

In game two, the Mighty Oaks ran away in the 3rd inning and never looked back. After plating 2 runs on hits by Goforth, Ward, and Ghrist, the Mighty Oaks stayed strong through the whole game. The 4 runs in the top of the 6th inning sealed the deal as the Mighty Oaks completed their doubleheader sweep of Carlow University. Freshman, Liberty Smith pitched the whole game for the Oaks. She went all 7 innings allowing 2 runs on 8 hits with 1 strikeout. 

In the second doubleheader of the week, the Mighty Oaks took the field at Fairhaven Park also in Pittsburgh to face off with the Pioneers of Point Park. In game 1 of the series, the Mighty Oaks came out swinging. The Mighty Oaks scored 13 runs on 14 hits in game one. Hits by all Mighty Oaks lead to the 14 runs and a game 1 win over the Pioneers. In the circle once again was Emily Fitzwater. She went all 7 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 4 batters. The Mighty Oaks won game 1, 13-1.

Carrying an undefeated weekend record into the final game of the road trip, the Mighty Oaks looked to complete the Pittsburgh sweep. The Mighty Oaks fell behind early in the first inning dropping 0-1. After dropping that 1 run, the bats kept swinging as the Mighty Oaks plated 5 runs in the 4th and added 3 more in the 7th to win the game 8-4, completing their 4 game sweep in Pittsburgh. In the final game, Liberty Smith and Emily Fitzwater split the duties each going 3 innings. 

The Mighty Oaks are at home for 2 conference double headers this week on Friday and Saturday.
