Men's Soccer Falls in Penalty Kicks in RSC Semifinal

Evansville, IN- The Mighty Oaks advanced to the RSC Conference Semifinals for their fourth straight season. The Mighty Oaks were looking to continue their streak against the Golden Bears after defeating them 2-0 earlier in the season. This match however, didn't have the same result.

Only a minute into the game, the Mighty Oaks took the lead with a goal from Marc Robertson. Adam Dimba ripped a shot from around 20 yards out. WVU Tech keeper got his hands on it and deflected it up into the air where Marc Robertson destroyed the ball into the back of the net. The Mighty Oaks controlled the remainder of the first half as they took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break. Each team had four shots at the break with two on goal each.

The second half remained very similar to the first, a lot of good movement and ball control for the Mighty Oaks. The back line of Ian Cowie, Bobby Davis, Shamel Soulemane, and Drake Dickens, did a great job of keeping the Golden Bears away from the goal for the first 85 minutes of the game. WVU Tech Defender Julian Diaz broke through the defense and found the back of the net in the 87th minute to knot the game 1-1. Regulation time ended with this score and the teams prepared for the two overtime periods.

To start overtime, the Golden Bears took the first look on goal and it deflected just over the goal on a shot by Julian Diaz. The Mighty Oaks had the next opportunity with a shot over the goal by Filimon Ashfa. Both teams were close to connecting in the first overtime period, but the score remained 1-1.

The second overtime period featured only one shot for both teams, and it was a close one. Senior, captain Ian Cowie struck the ball and missed just over the top of the goal. The over time period ended with the score remaining the same, we headed for the Penalty Kick Shootout.

The Golden Bears would eventually win in the Penalty Shootout 5-3.
