Oakland City, IN – The women's basketball team hosted IU Southeast on Saturday afternoon and dominated the contest from start to finish, winning by a score of 109-63 topping the 100-point mark for the fifth time this season. Oakland City has now won five straight games to improve to 17-6, 13-1 (RSC).
The game started fast with Oakland City taking a quick lead and never looking back. Senior Marissa Austin opened the game with an assist to Emilee Hope who knocked down a three pointer just four seconds into the game. Austin and Hope lead the team in scoring, each pouring in 23 points for the Mighty Oaks. Austin went 7-12 (58.3%) from the field and made a season-high four three pointers.
The Mighty Oak's used a hot shooting opening quarter to take a 38-13 lead at the end of the first, shooting 14-26 (53.85%) and 4-9 (44.44%) from three. Oakland City made a season high 16 triples on 38 attempts.
Senior Jalaya Dowell had her eighth double-double of the season, finishing her afternoon with 12 points, 11 rebounds, two steals, two assists and a block. Oakland City outrebounded the Grenadiers 69 to 33, marking the most rebounds in a game this season for the Mighty Oaks.
Erin Whitehead and Tabatha Klem each scored in double figures for the Mighty Oaks, Whitehead completed her game with 11 points, four rebounds, two blocks and shooting 7-8 from the free throw line. Klem had 10 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists in the contest.
IU Southeast junior Leah Miller scored 30 points for the Grenadiers, but the depth of the Mighty Oaks overcame her strong performance. Oakland City's bench contributed 35 points in the game with Kyrisha Hay, Ellen Meeringa, Davinique Campbell, Moniek Meeringa and Gabrielle Joyner all contributing points in the game.
Next up for the Mighty Oaks is a trip to IU East on Tuesday. Oakland City won its first matchup with IU East back in early December 95-76.
