Oakland City, IN – On Wednesday afternoon, the Mighty Oaks baseball team faced off against NCAA Division 2 Roosevelt University. In a doubleheader, Oakland City was able to throw a shutout in game one, but did not succeed to win the second game of the doubleheader.
Game 1
Dicky Gonzalez started on the mound for Oakland City and he completed five shutout innings. The Puerto Rican right-hander allowed three hits, no walks and struck out six. His relievers were
Luis Pezzotti and
Ryan Lambert, they both did not allow a run either. On the offensive side, the Mighty Oaks scored their first run in the bottom of the third. A double steal attempt from
Josh Russell and
Marcos Arocho resulted in Arocho scoring. An inning later,
Moises Rosario singled and
Xander Willis drove him in with a double.
Kendric Sorgius made it 3-0 with a solo homerun in the fifth. Oakland City's offense got loose in the sixth, scoring six runs.
Xander Willis and
Fred Fernandez went back-to-back with homeruns.
Garrett Causey,
Noah Boon and
Moises Rosario also got on base with hits. The final score was 9-0 in the first game of the doubleheader.
Game 2
The Mighty Oaks started off struggling in game two as the Lakers of Roosevelt University put up six runs in the first inning. Oakland City scored one in the bottom of the inning after a walk for
Will Gibbs and singles from
Fred Fernandez and
Moises Rosario. After three innings the score was 2-9. The second Oakland City run came off the bat of
Fred Fernandez who hit a homerun. Eventually, the Lakers would add one more run while Oakland City scored two more. The final score was 4-10.
The Mighty Oaks used four arms on the mound.
Clark Gries (0.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) started the game. His relievers were
Tommy Johnson (1.2 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO),
Ian Hall (2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) and
Logan Swaney (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO).
Next up, the Mighty Oaks will travel to McKenzie, Tennessee where they face off against Bethel University for a three-game set this weekend. The games are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
