Joe Epkey enters his first season with the Mighty Oaks. 

Epkey previously served as the head men’s and women’s coach at Indiana University Southeast from 2014-2021.  Under his leadership the Grenadiers went 55-14 in conference play, winning two men’s conference tournament championships (2014, 2016) and a women’s regular season title (2015).  He coached over 40 all-conference selections and award winners including two Player of the Year winners Nick Roby (2016) and Audrey De Witt (2021).

Prior to his time as a college head coach Epkey was an assistant for Mark Reilly at Jeffersonville high school where he helped lead the Red Devils to its first State Final Four appearance in 2010.

At age 37, Epkey brings both collegiate coaching experience as well as a strong playing background.  He played majority of his career in Indiana winning the IHSAA State Doubles Championships (1999) and the IHSAA Team State Championships (2001) while at Center Grove high school.

As a college player Epkey played his first two season at the University of Southern Indiana where he was named GLVC Freshman of the Year (2003) and GLVC Player of the Year (2004). During his sophomore season he was ranked #2 in the nation in Division II after finishing National Singles Runner-up at the ITA Small College National Championships. 

Epkey transferred to Ball State University for his final two seasons and helped lead the 45th ranked Cardinals to a MAC regular season championship (2006) and was ranked 26th in the nation in doubles with partner Matt Baccarani. As a senior Epkey played #1 singles and doubles for the Cardinals and was named MAC Tournament MVP and MAC Player of the Year (2007).
Following his college career, Epkey travelled and played many pro circuit events throughout the United States. He won a round in the qualifier of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships which hosted the top players in the world. 

Coach Epkey lives in Sellersburg with his wife Maggie and their three children Conner (11), Logan (10) and Peyton (8).
