The Oakland City University women's golf team opened their season over the weekend at the Brescia University Invitational, held at The Pearl Club, in Owensboro, Kentucky. After an opening round 336, the Oaks found themselves with an 11 shot lead over the host Bearcats of Brescia University (347), while IU-Kokomo fielded two teams in the event, with their A team shooting a 359, followed by a 373 from their B team.
OCU's second round 345 was not up to the opening round standard, but proved good enough to make their 381 total the best in the field. BU's 351 pushed their two-day total to 698, earning them second place, while IU-Kokomo's A team had the best round of the final day, shooting a 342, for a 701 total. IU-K's B team finished with a 364 on the day, 737 overall.
Freshman
Hallie Hinton (New Salisbury, IN/North Harrison HS) shot an opening round 82 on Friday, leaving her one stroke out of first place individually. She followed that up with a second round 81, the best of the day, earning her medalist honors with a two day total of 163. IU-Kokomo's Brandi Jones carded a 165 (82, 83) to take second place, followed by Brescia's Emily Lyons, who shot 166 (81, 85).
Oakland City's
Shelbi Cook (English, IN/Crawford County HS), a senior, joined junior
Kristen Harpenau (Haubstadt, IN/Gibson Southern HS) at 172, and a tie for fourth place with two others. Cook went 85, 87, while Harpenau carded rounds of 84 and 88.
Gillian Blessinger (Jasper, IN/Jasper HS) opened her collegiate career with a two-day total of 178 (86, 92) and an 11th place finish, followed by senior
Kelby Godden (French Lick, IN/Springs Valley HS/Vincennes University), who carded a 179 (85, 94), good for a tie for 12th. Junior
Taylor Pemberton (Haubstadt, IN/Gibson Southern HS) shot a 181 (92, 89) to finish in 15th place, while freshman
Katie Alexander (New Salisbury, IN/North Harrison HS) rounded out the OCU lineup with a 214 total (111, 103), and a 24th place finish.
The Lady Oaks will return to action in the Stateline Shootout, hosted by Mount St. Joseph University, at the Miami Whitewater Forest Golf Course, in Harrison, Ohio, Saturday, September 1, and Sunday, September 2.
