The OCU women's golf team continued their strong start to the season, as they competed in the Kentucky Christian University Invitational, held at Hidden Cove Golf Course, in Olive Hill, Kentucky. Through wet and rainy conditions, the tournament was trimmed from 36 to 27 holes because of storms, but the Lady Oaks stood strong, shooting 355 on Saturday, followed by 172 on Sunday, to take second place in the five team field.
In round one,
Kristen Harpenau (Jr./Gibson Southern HS) led the way for the Oaks, shooting an 86, followed by
Hallie Hinton (Fr./North Harrison HS) who shot 87.
Taylor Pemberton (Jr./Gibson Southern HS) came in at 90, followed by
Shelbi Cook (Sr./Crawford County HS) who posted a 92.
Kelby Godden (Sr./Springs Valley HS) carded a 96, while
Gillian Blessinger (Fr./Jasper HS) and
Katie Alexander (Fr./North Harrison HS) scored 89 and 113 playing as individuals.
On the second day, after an all-night storm, and with more rain coming, the window allowed for only nine holes of competition. The Oaks were led by Hinton's 41, followed by Cook's 43. Godden and Pemberton both finished with 44, while Harpenau came in with 50. Blessinger shot 46, while Alexander finished with a 55.
OCU's 527 total was good for second place, as the University of Pikeville won the tournament with a two-day total of 492 (328/164). Shawnee State University shot rounds of 373 and 191 for a total of 564, and a third place finish. The University of Rio Grande followed their opening 410 with a 204, ending in fourth place at 614. The host school, Kentucky Christian University, did not have a team score.
Hinton was named to the all tournament team, finishing in fifth place overall, while Pemberton tied for ninth place. Blessinger and Cook tied for 11th, followed by Harpenau's 13th place finish. Godden finished in a tie for 16th, while Alexander moved up a spot on the final day to finish 24th.
The Lady Oaks will travel to Terre Haute, IN, to take on St. Mary of the Woods College on Thursday, September 13, then head to Crestview Hills, Kentucky, where they will play against Thomas More College and Spalding University, on Sunday, September 16.
