The Oakland City University softball team's tough start to the 2019 season continued in their double header against the Pomeroys of St. Mary of the Woods College, held at EGGSL Field, in Oakland City. After dropping game one 6-1, the Oaks lost by the same score in the nightcap, bringing their record to 1-12 on the year.
Game one saw Caitlyn Huff get the start in the circle for OCU, lasting four innings, allowing six runs, three earned, on six hits and a walk, while striking out five.
Lauren Stone threw two innings of relief, allowing three hits, while
Valerie Lewis came in for an inning, giving up two walks.
Stone scored OCU's only run, driven in by a sacrifice fly from
Demi Croak. Stone,
McKendree Ward, Huff and
Bailey Davis each had a hit for the Oaks, all singles.
In the second game, Lewis pitched four and a third innings, allowing five runs, only one of which was earned, on eight hits and a walk, while striking out one. Huff finished the final two and two-thirds innings, allowing one earned run, giving up one hit and two walks, while striking out one.
Ward went a perfect 4-4 at the plate, including a double.
Misty Merter scored OCU's run, as her double was followed by an RBI double from
Reagan Hensley. Stone, Lewis, and Huff each hit singles, while Hensley and Huff both reached with walks.
Next up for the Oaks will be a Saturday doubleheader against Lincoln College, out of Lincoln, Illinois. OCU will host the games at EGGSL Field in Oakland City, with game one scheduled to start at 1:00 pm.
