Oakland City, IN – In the last game of the regular season, Oakland City took on the Carlow University Celtics at Aigner Field. With one last chance to improve their record, the Mighty Oaks took full advantage and walked away with a victory on Saturday, October 29.
Oakland City's first goal came in the 22
nd minute, when
Matt Menegon found the net via a free kick. The Mighty Oaks had been in command of the ball the entire game. The ball was in possession for the majority of the time and five shots on goal were fired before Menegon was able to kick in the 1-0.
Not much later, in the 30
th minute Oakland City took a 2-0 lead after
James O'Brien scored, following an assist by
Brian Elizarraras. The Mighty Oaks stayed in command of the ball the entire game and didn't give Carlow University any opportunities to get close to scoring.
After about an hour of play, coach
Adam Sell opted to do a mass substitution and it paid off right away. The new energy on the field immediately resulted in some good offensive work on the pitch. In the 67
th minute,
Brian Elizarraras scored the 3-0.
After the kick-off by Carlow, Oakland City took immediate possession of the ball again and it only took a minute to put the fourth goal on the scoreboard. This time it was
Licson Regis who found the net after an assist by
JD Kerber.
Oakland City's defense did a good job keeping the Celtics of Carlow University from getting close to scoring. They were not able to fire a single shot on goal in the entire duration of the game.
With this victory, the Mighty Oaks improved their overall record to 8-5-5 and their River States Conference record to 4-3-2. With this they claimed the number five seed in the 2022 River States Conference Men's Soccer Championship. They will play at Point Park University (No. 4 seed) on November 5 at 6:00 PM Eastern Time in the quarterfinals. If they advance, they will take on No. 1 seed WVU Tech on November 9 in the semifinals. The finals of the for the RSC Championship will take place on November 12.
