Box Score Chillicothe, OH – To open up the River States Conference tournament in Chillicothe, Ohio, the Mighty Oaks baseball team took on No. 1 seed Midway University at 11 AM. An early Oakland City lead did not last, causing the Mighty Oaks to move on to play the loser of the second game being played today.
The Mighty Oaks took a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Alec Pruitt led off the inning with a single through the left side, his courtesy runner
Mason Simon was able to steal second base. With two outs in the inning, a single from
Jared Kirkman brought home Simon, giving Oakland City the lead.
Sam Pinckert doubled the score in the fourth inning, when he led off with a homerun to left field. This wasn't the only run scored in the inning. With two outs,
Garrett Causey drew a walk. He was brought home on a triple to the right centerfield gap from
Conner Oxley. Oakland City was up 3-0 after four innings.
An inning later, the Midway Eagles got on a roll in the batter's box. Six hits, including a 3-run homerun resulted in a six-run inning. This put the home team up 3-6.
The Mighty Oaks did not give in. In the sixth, they put up a three-spot to tie the game back up at six.
Alec Pruitt started the inning with a double,
Garrett Causey followed with an RBI single.
Conner Oxley also singled. Both Causey and Oxley advanced a base on a wild pitch. This allowed
Jared Kirkman to drive home a run with a sacrifice fly. In the next at bat, another sacrifice fly followed. This time it was
Aron Busick with the game tying RBI.
The score would remain tied until the bottom of the eighth. An infield single, followed by a homerun, put Midway up 6-8. This ended up being the final score, as the Mighty Oaks were not able to plate any more runs, despite having runners on in the top of the ninth.
Gehrig Tenhumberg (4.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO),
Tommy Johnson (L, 3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 SO) and
Evan Price (0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) all toed the rubber in the first game of the tournament for Oakland City.
Tomorrow, the Mighty Oaks will take the field again at 11 AM. This will be an elimination game between the Oaks and the loser of the game between Rio Grande (No. 5 seed) and Point Park (No. 2 seed).
