Box Score 3 To wrap up a busy week, the Mighty Oaks hosted Shawnee State University for a River States Conference series. In three games with a lot of good offense for Oakland City, a sweep was completed. This puts the Mighty Oaks at 7-2 in conference play this year.
Game 1
The Mighty Oaks started the weekend off good, collecting twelve hits in the first game.
Leyton Ivers led off the inning with a double,
Sam Pinckert walked,
Noah Baugher reached base on a fielder's choice. With runners on second and third,
Fred Fernandez singled to bring in two runs. In the bottom of the third,
Marcos Arocho led off with a double, he was brought home on a
Leyton Ivers single, making it a 3-0 ballgame.
Shawnee State was able to score two on a dropped fly ball in the top of the fourth, bringing them back in the ballgame. In the bottom half of the inning,
Marcos Arocho connected for a grand slam to reassure the lead for the Mighty Oaks. Arocho's long ball was followed op by another homerun, this one from
Leyton Ivers. All of the sudden, Oakland City was up 8-2 after four innings. On a 3-run homerun in the sixth, Shawnee State came back into the game a little bit, however the Oaks stayed hot at the plate.
Marcos Arocho singled to get on base,
Leyton Ivers connected for his second homerun of the game, putting Oakland City up 10-5.
Sam Pinckert also drove the ball out of the park in the bottom of the sixth, scoring the Oaks' eleventh run of the afternoon. The Bears would plate on more run via a homerun in the eighth inning, making the final score 11-6.
Two pitchers toed the rubber for the Mighty Oaks.
Thomas King earned the win and pitched 5.2 innings. He gave up two hits, four runs (none earned), while walking three and striking out seven.
Owen Spears got the save, pitching the last 3.1 innings. He gave up four hits, two runs (one earned), while walking none and striking out three.
Game 2
The offense stayed strong in game two of the doubleheader on Saturday.
Leyton Ivers stayed hot as he led off the game with his third homerun of the day. A couple of errors and a single from
Oliver Hamilton allowed for the 2-0 to score. A sacrifice fly from
Aron Busick scored the third Mighty Oaks run of the inning.
Artem Logvinov drove in the 4-0 with a sacrifice fly in the third, this allowed
Blake Herrmann to score, who was the courtesy runner for
Oliver Hamilton (walk). An inning later,
Noah Baugher reached base on an error and was able to advance on a wild pitch.
Fred Fernandez drove him in with a single through the left side, making it 5-0.
Three runs were scored in the fifth inning.
Oliver Hamilton led off with a single.
Xander Willis followed him up with an RBI double.
Artem Logvinov drove in Willis with a deep fly to centerfield. The homerun by Logvinov put the Mighty Oaks up 8-0.
Oakland City surrendered two runs in the sixth via a homerun. These were the only runs given up by the Mighty Oaks pitchers in this seven-inning game.
Benjamen Simmons hurled six innings to earn the win. He gave up five hits, two runs (earned), while walking one and striking out one.
Evan Price shut the door in the seventh, he surrendered two hits but was able to prevent them from scoring by striking out three. A solid 8-2 victory for the Mighty Oaks.
Game 3
On a cold and windy Sunday, the Mighty Oaks were looking to complete the sweep versus Shawnee State. Oakland City put the first runs on the board in the third inning.
Leyton Ivers led off the inning with a walk.
Aron Busick moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, allowing
Noah Baugher to score him on an RBI double.
Fred Fernandez followed with a single, bringing home Baugher. Shawnee State was able to tie up the game in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs on two hits.
The Mighty Oaks immediately answered in the bottom half of the inning.
Aron Busick doubled to lead off the inning and
Noah Baugher followed with a single.
Fred Fernandez came up clutch once again, another single brought in Busick. While the Oakland City defense kept playing solidly, the offense added some insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Xander Willis got on with a hit by pitch, he stole second and was brought home on a
Sam Pinckert single. Pinckert was able to score on a single from
Oliver Hamilton, making it a 5-2 ballgame. The Oaks scored two more in the eighth inning.
Fred Fernandez collected his third hit of the day to lead of the inning.
Xander Willis reached on a fielder's choice and stole second and
Alec Pruitt walked. On a single from
Sam Pinckert,
Xander Willis scored a run.
Jasiel Arocho, who was Pruitt's courtesy runner was able to steal home on a double steal with runners on first and third. Arocho scored the final run of the game, putting the final score at 7-2.
Gehrig Tenhumberg threw six innings and earned the win for Oakland City. He allowed four hits, two runs (earned), while walking three and fanning two.
Kiefer Parsons came in the game and shut the door for three shutout innings. While earning the save, he allowed just one hit and walk, as he struck out three.
The sweep over Shawnee State puts Oakland City at 23-8 on the year and 7-2 in River States Conference play. On Tuesday, the Oaks will travel to Kentucky State University for a midweek game. A day later, JV will host Olney Central College at home. During the weekend, coach Andy Lasher and his squad will make the trip to Indiana University Kokomo for conference play.
