Box Score 3 The Oakland City baseball squad traveled to Kokomo, Indiana for a River States Conference series versus the Cougars of IU Kokomo. Two nailbiters on Friday resulted in extra inning losses for the Mighty Oaks. Things went better on Saturday, as the Oaks were able to prevail and take home a victory.
Game 1
The Cougars got off to a good start, scoring two runs in the first inning. The Mighty Oaks slowly fought their way back in the game.
Aron Busick drove in the first Oakland City run in the third inning with a double to right field. An inning later the game got tied up at two.
Fred Fernandez, who led-off the inning, got on thanks to an error. Another defensive miscue resulted in runners on first and third.
Sam Pinckert drove in Fernandez with a sacrifice fly.
An inning later,
Marcos Arocho got the Oaks started with a single. A sacrifice bunt from
Leyton Ivers moved Arocho into scoring position.
Noah Baugher singled to right field to put the Oakland City on top, 3-2 was the score after five innings. In the bottom of the sixth, a 2-run homerun put IU Kokomo back on top.
In the eighth inning,
Aron Busick led-off with a hit by pitch.
Noah Baugher doubled to drive in Busick and tied up the game at four. Baugher later scored on a sacrifice fly from
Oliver Hamilton. After eight innings the Oaks were up 5-4. In the bottom of the ninth, the Cougars tied up the game, so extra-innings were needed. A wild-pitch in the bottom of the eleventh allowed the sixth Kokomo run to score, resulting in a walk-off loss for Oakland City.
Thomas King started the game for the Mighty Oaks. He threw six innings, gave up six hits, four runs (three earned), while walking none and striking out eight.
Mick Uebelhor (2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO),
Evan Price (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) and
Drew Fifer (L, 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) came in out of the bullpen.
Game 2
After a tough loss, Oakland City started off hot in game two of the series on Saturday.
Leyton Ivers singled,
Aron Busick followed with another single. On a fielder's choice from
Noah Baugher, Ivers was able to score the first run of the game.
Fred Fernandez followed with a single, this brought home Baugher. An inning later, a single from
Leyton Ivers and an
Aron Busick RBI double scored the 3-0.
IU Kokomo scored their first run in the bottom of the third on a homerun. In the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars tied up the game at three, so once again extra innings were necessary. In the top of the eighth,
Noah Baugher led off with a single.
Oliver Hamilton brought him in with an RBI double, putting Oakland City up 4-3. In the bottom half of the inning, IU Kokomo plated two runs, resulting in another walk-off loss for the Mighty Oaks.
Benjamen Simmons pitched five innings of one-run baseball. He gave up four hits, walked four and struck out four.
Kiefer Parsons (1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) and
Owen Spears (L, 1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO) were the relievers in this game.
Game 3
IU Kokomo started off well, as they scored two in the first on a homerun to right field. The Mighty Oaks answered right away. Walks for
Artem Logvinov,
JT Smallwood and
Marcos Arocho loaded the bases. This put
Leyton Ivers in the position to drive in two runs with a single down the left field line.
The Cougars plated three runs in the bottom half of the second, putting them on top, 2-5. A big offensive inning, with nine hits and seven runs allowed Oakland City to fight their way back in the game.
JT Smallwood started with a walk,
Marcos Arocho,
Leyton Ivers (RBI) and
Aron Busick (2 RBI) all singled consecutively.
Noah Baugher kept the offense going, as he doubled down the left field line, allowing Busick to score.
Fred Fernandez,
Alec Pruitt and
Artem Logvinov all singled to load the bases back up. A 2-RBI single from
JT Smallwood resulted in the seventh and eighth run to score.
Marcos Arocho added one more as he drove in Logvinov with a single to left field. After four innings, Oakland City was up 9-5. In the bottom of the fifth, IU Kokomo would score once more, making it a 9-6 ballgame. This ended up being the final score in Kokomo.
