Box Score After a win versus Trinity Christian on Saturday night and an off day on Sunday, the Mighty Oaks were slated to play the Patriots of Mission University. In a close game, the Mighty Oaks pitched it well, resulting in the second win of the NCCAA World Series for Oakland City.
It took a while for the Mighty Oaks offense to get going. In the second, third and fourth inning Oakland City left two runners on base repeatedly. This resulted in a real pitcher's duel at the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy.
The 0-0 tie was finally broken in the top of the fifth.
Leyton Ivers led-off the inning with a single up the middle.
Aron Busick followed with another single, putting runners on the corners. On a fielder's choice from
Noah Baugher, Busick was out at second, but Ivers plated the first Oakland City run of the afternoon. A hit by pitch for
Fred Fernandez put runners on first and second, which gave
Xander Willis the opportunity to drive in Baugher on a single up the middle. A double steal from Willis and Fernandez, resulted in a 3-0 score after four and a half innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, Mission University stopped the Oakland City momentum, as they got their first run of the day across.
An inning later, singles from
Mason Simon,
Marcos Arocho and
Aron Busick loaded the bases.
Noah Baugher drew a four-pitch walk, which made it a 4-1 ballgame.
Once again, the Patriots were able to come with an answer, bringing home a run on a sacrifice fly. The score became 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth and would stay there for the remainder of the game.
Coach Andy Lasher used four pitchers in this very well pitched game.
Benjamen Simmons earned the win, throwing five innings of two-run baseball. He gave up six hits, while walking two and striking out one.
Kiefer Parsons came in after Simmons and hurled 2.2 innings without allowing a run. The southpaw surrendered three hits, walked none and struck out three.
Tommy Johnson came in and completed the eighth inning, recording the last out, before
Evan Price entered the game to earn the save. The left-hander didn't allow a hit or run, while walking one and fanning one.
With this win over Mission University, the Mighty Oaks are now 2-0 in the NCCAA World Series and face-off against Southwestern Christian University at 11:00 AM tomorrow. After the game versus the Eagles in the morning, OCU will play again 6:00 PM on Tuesday. One victory on Tuesday means that the Mighty Oaks move on to the Championship round on Wednesday.
