Baseball Sweeps Marian Knights

Oakland City, IN – After snow covered Konkler Field ever since the return from Florida, the Mighty Oaks baseball team finally got to play again on Sunday and Monday, when they faced the Knights of Marian University.

Game 1
Mick Uebelhor started the first game of the four-game series on Sunday. The sophomore right-hander earned his first win of the season with five innings of 2-hit baseball. He allowed no one to score, despite walking size. Uebelhor struck out eight of the Knights hitters. His offense got going in the second inning when Kendric Sorgius and Fred Fernandez both singles. Fernandez' single allowed Sorgius to score the first run of the weekend. An inning later, three runs were tacked on thanks to RBIs from Sorgius, Fernandez and Xander Willis. Marian scored their first runs in the top of the sixth inning, making it a 4-2 ballgame. The Mighty Oaks immediately came with an answer, putting up six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Keifer Wilson, Moises Rosario, Kendric Sorgius and Xander Willis all collected knocks during this offensive outburst. The final score was 10-2.

Game 2
The second game of the doubleheader was a little closer in score. Oliver Hamilton drove in a run in the bottom of the second to give the Oaks a 1-0 lead early. This lead didn't last long as the Knights answered with two runs in the top of the third. A 2-run homerun from Moises Rosario brought Oakland City back on top in the bottom of the third, making it now a 3-2 ballgame. The Knights came with an answer once again, tying the game up in the top of the sixth. Oakland City strung together a couple of hits in the bottom of the sixth to have them regain the lead. Josh Russel, Moises Rosario and Xander Willis all collecting basehits to help retake the lead. Gehrig Tenhumberg pitched six innings, allowing five hits, three runs, two of which were earned. He walked two and struck out seven while earning the win. Dicky Gonzalez earned the save, he pitched one inning and did not give up a run.

Game 3
On Monday, the Oaks started off very strong, putting up a six-spot in the first inning. Dicky Gonzalez started with a single, Josh Russell followed with a double, Moises Rosario, Fred Fernandez and Xander Willis all singled before Oliver Hamilton drove in two with a double. Marcos Arocho followed with another double making it 6-0 after one. Marian scored two runs in the top of the fourth, an inning later the Mighty Oaks scored again when Xander Willis drove in Moises Rosario with a single. An inning later, the Knights tacked on two more, making the score 7-4, this ended up being the final score for game three of the series. Moises Rosario and Xander Willis both collected three hits in this game. Benjamen Simmons started the game for Oakland City, he hurled 5.1 innings, giving up four hits and four runs (all earned) while walking one and striking out four. Landen Ray came in to complete the sixth inning, he allowed one hit. Chase Rubenacker earned the save as he pitched the last three innings while not allowing a baserunner and striking out four.

Game 4
The bats really got going in the last of the series for Oakland City, as they were able to put up thirteen runs in the seven-inning game. The first run came in the first inning when Josh Russell went yard. Marian homered as well and tied up the score in the second inning. In the bottom of the second inning, Fred Fernandez also went deep and made it 2-1. Kendric Sorgius, Garrett Causey, Marcos Arocho, Josh Russell and Moises Rosario all collected hits and gave the Mighty Oaks a 6-1 lead. In the fifth inning both Moises Rosario and Kendric Sorgius homered to make it 9-1. More runs were added in the sixth through an RBI double from Keifer Wilson, a sacrifice fly from Kendric Sorgius and a 2-run homerun form Garrett Causey made it 13-1. Cole Lambird started the game and pitched five innings. He gave up two hits and one run while walking one and punching out three. Owen Spears pitched one inning in which he struck out two. Kendric Sorgius closed out the game he didn't give up any hits or runs, he walked one and struck out one.

Next up for the Mighty Oaks will be a doubleheader versus Roosevelt University at home. These games will take place at Konkler Field, starting at noon on Wednesday.
