Oakland City, IN – Due to the storms that hit Oakland City, only two out of three games were played between the Mighty Oaks and IU Kokomo. In two slugfests on Friday, the Oaks came out on top and were able to improve to a 5-0 record in the River States Conference.
Game 1
On a windy Friday afternoon, the balls were flying out of Konkler Field.
Moises Rosario opened the score with a two-run homerun to left field. An inning later,
Kendric Sorgius also went yard to make it 3-0. IU Kokomo came back in the game scoring three runs in the top of the third. An inning later a solo homerun gave the Cougars a 3-4 lead. In the bottom half of the inning,
Kendric Sorgius went yard again, this time it was a 3-run shot to give the Mighty Oaks a lead again. That lead did not last very long as Kokomo answered with three runs in the fifth. Another Mighty Oaks homerun, this one from
Josh Russell put Oakland City back on top, making it 8-7 in the bottom of the fifth.
Marcos Arocho went yard an inning later, putting Oakland City up 9-7. While the homerun damage had been done, a couple more runs scored, making the final score 11-8 in game one.
Mick Uebelhor pitched 4.2 innings in which he allowed six hits and seven runs, four of which were earned. He walked two and punched out seven. The win went to
Chase Rubenacker who finished the game by pitched 4.1 innings, he gave up six hits and one run (unearned). He walked one and struck out none.
Game 2
The Cougars started the second game off hot. They put up four runs in the top of the first. The Mighty Oaks answered right away and put up four runs as well. Two-run homeruns from
Xander Willis and
Fred Fernandez tied the game at four. Kokomo took a 4-5 lead in the second inning, this didn't last very long as the Oaks answered with five runs in the bottom of the second. Two 2-run homerun from
Kendric Sorgius and Josh Russel, followed by a solo shot from
Fred Fernandez made it 9-5.
Dicky Gonzalez homered an inning later to make it 11-5. Kokomo would score two more runs, but they were not able to regain a lead, as Oakland City won 11-7.
Gehrig Tenhumberg started the game for the Mighty Oaks. He pitched 4.2 innings, allowed nine hits, seven runs (six earned), while walking two and fanning six.
Owen Spears pitched 1.1 innings out of the bullpen. He allowed one hit and struck out one.
Dicky Gonzalez closed out the game, he put up a zero while walking one and striking out one.
Game 3
Due to the tornado that hit Oakland City on Friday night and Saturday morning, the third game of the series was not able to be played.
On Tuesday, the Mighty Oaks will play a single nine-inning game at home versus Bethel University (TN), this will start at 3 PM. After this, coach Andy Lasher and his squad head to Portsmouth, Ohio where they will face off against Shawnee State University.
