Box Score 3 Portsmouth, OH – The River States Conference season continued for the Mighty Oaks baseball team this weekend in Portsmouth, Ohio where they faced off against the Bears of Shawnee State University. The Oaks were 5-0 going into the series versus the Bears.
Game 1
The Oaks came out swinging it well. In the first inning the bases loaded up after two walks and a hit by pitch. This allowed
Fred Fernandez to drive in two runs with a single to left field. An inning later, basehits from
Dicky Gonzalez and
Marcos Arocho resulted in a 3-0 lead for Oakland City. In the top of the third the Oaks extended their lead to 4-0 after a single from
Keifer Wilson allowed
Hudson Allen to score. Homeruns from
Fred Fernandez and
Keifer Wilson in the top of the fifth inning made it 6-0 Oaks. Back-to-back homeruns from the Bears brought them back in the game in the bottom half of the fifth. Another homerun from Shawnee State in the sixth made it 6-4. In the seventh, the home team made it a one-run ballgame. The Oaks answered in the top of the eighth. A double from
Kendric Sorgius, a walk from
Xander Willis and a double from
Moises Rosario resulted in two runs for the Oaks, making it 8-5. A 2-run homerun from
Dicky Gonzalez was the icing on the cake as he made it 10-5. The final score ended up being 10-6
Mick Uebelhor started the game for Oakland City, he pitched 4.1 innings in which he gave up four hits and two runs (both earned), while walking four and striking out six.
Chase Rubenacker came in in relief, he threw 2.2 innings and also gave up four hits. Three runs scored; none were earned. Rubenacker walked one and struck out two.
Dicky Gonzalez finished the game for Oakland City, he threw two innings, gave up two hits and one run, while walking none and striking out one.
Game 2
After looking at an early 0-1 deficit, Oakland City got their bats going in the second and third inning, combining for twelve runs.
Kendric Sorgius drove in the first two runs with a double,
Marcos Arocho reached base on an error, allowing
Dicky Gonzalez to score. Another error was made when
Xander Willis was hitting, Sorgius scored on this play. Singles from
Moises Rosario ad
Josh Russell made it 5-1 in the second. A grand slam from
Marcos Arocho gave the Mighty Oaks a nice cushion, putting the score at 9-1.
Fred Fernandez also homered, driving in three runs to make it 12-1. A bases-loaded walk for
Josh Russell added another run in the top of the fourth. In the top of the sixth inning,
Marcos Arocho went yard again, putting Oakland City up 14-1. The Bears would score two more runs but could not stop a mercy-rule victory for the Oaks. The final score was 14-3 after seven innings.
Gehrig Tenhumberg pitched well for Oakland City, he hurled six innings of one-run baseball in which he gave up six hits while walking one and striking out five. His reliever was
Weston Allen; despite not giving up a hit, he surrendered two runs on two walks.
Game 3
After two big victories, the Mighty Oaks started off hot once again. In the top of the first,
Xander Willis hit a 2-run homerun to open up the score.
Moises Rosario followed with a double; he was able to score on a single from
Hudson Allen to make it 3-0. An inning later
Xander Willis singled and stole second, he scored on a basehit from
Moises Rosario. Shawnee State homered in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 4-1. After hitting a triple in the top of the third,
Hudson Allen was able to score the 5-1 on a wild pitch. Homeruns from
Josh Russell and
Hudson Allen in the top of the fifth made it 7-1. The Bears immediately came with an answer as they put up four runs in the bottom half. Shawnee State made it a one-run ballgame in the bottom of the sixth, with the score being 7-6. A solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh tied the game up and with two outs, the home team hit another homerun to win in walk-off fashion.
Despite the 7-9 loss, a special offensive feature was accomplished by Mighty Oaks second baseman
Hudson Allen. The freshman from Huntingburg, Indiana hit for the cycle in this game, something you don't see every day.
Benjamen Simmons started the game for Oakland City, he hurled 4.2 innings, giving up five hits and five runs (all earned), he walked three and struck out four.
Owen Spears pitched 1.1 innings out of the bullpen, he allowed two hits and one run, while walking none and collecting one strikeout. Closer
Kendric Sorgius was not able to shut the door, while getting two outs, three hits resulted in three runs.
A busy week is ahead for the Mighty Oaks baseball program. On Monday, the JV squad heads to Frontier Community College for a game. Lindsey Wilson comes to town on Tuesday for a game at Konkler Field. On the weekend, River States Conference play continues at home as the Red Storm of Rio Grande make the drive to Oakland City for a three-game series.
