Owensboro, KY – On Tuesday, the Mighty Oaks took the short trip to Owensboro, where they faced off against NCAA D2 Kentucky Wesleyan College. Quality pitching early and some big two-out offense in the eighth inning was the recipe for a 9-5 victory.
Freshman right-handed pitcher
Clark Gries started on the mound for the Oaks and he did an outstanding job, pitching six innings of shutout baseball. He gave up five hits, walked none and struck out six. He earned his second win on the season.
The Oaks took a lead in the top of the second after a single from
Josh Russell and a two-run homerun from
Hudson Allen. An inning later, Oakland City doubled their lead, another two-run homerun was the cause of this. The long ball came off the bat of
Moises Rosario.
It took a while for the Oaks to score again, but with two outs in the top of the eighth inning, the offense got going again. Walks for
Josh Russell,
Fred Fernandez and
Hudson Allen loaded the bases. A wild pitch resulted in the 5-0 being able to score. Another walk, this time for
Dicky Gonzalez loaded the bases back up. This gave
Leyton Ivers a chance to hit a 2-RBI single to left field.
Kendric Sorgius followed with another single, he drove in two runs as well. This made it a 9-0 ballgame. Kentucky Wesleyan scored four runs in the bottom half of the eighth and would score one more in the ninth, with that, the final score was 9-5.
After Gries was done pitching, four relievers toed the rubber for the Mighty Oaks.
Luis Pezzotti (0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB),
Landen Ray (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO),
Dicky Gonzalez (1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) and
Kendric Sorgius (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) all saw game-action on Tuesday.
This weekend, the Mighty Oaks will head to Beckley, West Virginia where they face off against WVU Tech in River States Conference. The games are scheduled to be on Friday and Saturday.
