Box Score 3 Beckley, WV – This weekend, the Mighty Oaks ballclub made their way up to Beckley, West Virginia for a three-game River States Conference series versus the Golden Bears of WVU Tech. After dropping the Friday game, Oakland City came back on Saturday to win the series.
Game 1
Due to flooding on the field in Beckley, the game got moved to GoMart Ballpark in Charleston, WV. It took until the fourth inning for the first run to be scored. A lead-off walk for
Xander Willis was followed by a single from
Moises Rosario.
Josh Russell moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt. A passed ball allowed Willis to make it a 1-0 ballgame. Later in the inning,
Hudson Allen reached base on an error, allowing Rosario to score the 2-0. In the bottom of the fourth, WVU Tech came with an immediate answer. A walk and hit resulted in runners on second and third base. With two outs, a single to left field tied the game at two. A walk and a single later, the Golden Bears were up 2-3. This ended up being the final score of the first game, as offense was hard to come by.
Mick Uebelhor was the starting pitcher for Oakland City, he pitched six innings, allowed five hits, three runs (all earned), while walking four and fanning nine.
Owen Spears pitched the last two innings, he gave up no hits and no runs, while walking two and striking out none.
Game 2
On Saturday, the water had drained and the game was on as scheduled in Beckley. The Mighty Oaks took an early lead in this one, as three runs were scored in the third inning.
Hudson Allen reached base on error, he reached second base on a wild pitch and moved up to third on a single from
Keifer Wilson.
Dicky Gonzalez doubled to make it 1-0. A wild pitch allowed
Will Gibbs, who courtesy ran for Wilson, to score the second run of the inning. On a sacrifice fly from
Kendric Sorgius, Gonzalez made it 3-0 as he crossed home plate.
An inning later,
Moises Rosario lead-off with a homerun to make it 4-0.
Fred Fernandez singled and
Hudson Allen doubled to put two runners in scoring position. An RBI single from
Keifer Wilson made it 5-0 and a sacrifice fly from
Dicky Gonzalez resulted in the sixth run to score. On a single from
Kendric Sorgius allowed Wilson to score, not much later
Marcos Arocho doubled to bring home Sorgius.
Moises Rosario followed with a single to score Arocho. Six runs were scored in the top of the third, making it a 9-0 ballgame. WVU Tech scored a run in the bottom of the fifth. The Mighty Oaks answered with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth. After a single from
Hudson Allen and a double from
Dicky Gonzalez it was 10-1.
Marcos Arocho then singled to drive in Gonzalez and
Will Gibbs. Gibbs ran for catcher
Keifer Wilson who got hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. In the top of the seventh,
Noah Boon hit a pinch-hit homerun to make it 13-1. The Golden Bears would score one more in the bottom of the seventh but could not prevent the mercy rule from being in effect. Oakland City won 13-2.
Gehrig Tenhumberg started for the Mighty Oaks and earned the win. In five innings he gave up two hits and one run (earned). He walked two and struck out six.
Weston Allen came in out of the bullpen. In two innings he surrendered three hits and one run (earned), as he walked none and struck out four.
Game 3
In the rubber match of the series the Mighty Oaks put up two runs in the top of the second to take an early lead.
Fred Fernandez started the inning by reaching base on an error.
Keifer Wilson followed with a double to put runners on second and third.
Josh Russell drove in the first run with a groundout. On a triple from
Dicky Gonzalez,
Will Gibbs (courtesy runner for Wilson) scored the 2-0. A homerun from the Golden Bears made it 2-1 in the bottom of the second.
Keifer Wilson singled to lead-off the top of the fourth inning.
Hudson Allen and
Josh Russell both singled to load up the bases. A passed ball allowed all runners to move up a base and make it a 3-1 ballgame. With two outs, the Oaks caught a break as
Marcos Arocho struck out but reached base on a passed ball. This allowed
Hudson Allen to score the fourth run of the game.
Josh Russell made it 5-1 in the top of the sixth when he hit a solo homerun to dead center field. A walk and a passed ball resulted
Dicky Gonzalez to end up at second base.
Keifer Wilson drove him in with a single to left field to make it 6-1. The seventh run of the game scored when
Moises Rosario reached base on a dropped fly ball by the center fielder. WVU Tech would score one more run in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 7-2.
Benjamen Simmons was the starting pitcher for Oakland City. In 3.2 innings he gave up three hits and one run (earned). He walked two and struck out one.
Chase Rubenacker came in out of the bullpen to finish the game. He pitched 3.1 innings in which he surrendered two hits and one run (earned). He walked one and struck out one.
A series win after a tough loss in game one improves the Mighty Oaks' River States Conference record to 12-2. The overall record on the season stands at 26-11. Next up on the schedule is a midweek game on Tuesday at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky. On the weekend, the Eagles of Midway University come to town to continue the RSC season.
