Oaks Defeat Shawnee State in Chillicothe

Box Score Chillicothe, OH – On Sunday, the Oaks took on the #3 seed in the River States Conference tournament, Shawnee State University. A game that was halted in the seventh inning due to hail and lightning, ended up resulting in a mercy rule victory.

The Mighty Oaks started the game with two runs in the bottom of the first. Marcos Arocho walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A fly ball from Xander Willis moved him to third and he scored the 1-0 when Moises Rosario reached base on an error. Rosario was able to score when Josh Russell hit a double to the right centerfield gap.

Thee runs were added in the third inning. Once again, a walk started the Mighty Oaks rally. After Josh Russell reached base on the free pass, he scored on a double from Fred Fernandnez. Hudson Allen reached base on an error and Keifer Wilson walked to load the bases. Dicky Gonzlez singled to make it 4-0 and an RBI single from Marcos Arocho scored the fifth run for Oakland City. The Bears came with in answer in the top of the fourth when it become a 5-2 ballgame following a 2-run homerun.

Two walks and an error loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, this allowed Dicky Gonzalez to drive in a run with a single to centerfield. Shawnee State stayed in the game, as they made it 6-3 in the top of the fifth.

A single from Xander Willis started the bottom of the fifth, three hit by pitches followed, allowing Willis to score. With the bases still loaded, Keifer Wilson doubled to center field, driving in two runs. This made the score 9-3 after five innings.

The Mighty Oaks would score four more runs in the seventh inning. Keifer Wilson doubled to left field, he scored when Dicky Gonzalez reached base on an error. Gonzalez later scored when Marcos Arocho reached base on another error by the Bears defense. Then, a combination of hail, rain, lightning and thunder hit Chillicothe, resulting in a one hour and forty-five-minute delay of the game. After the game was resumed, it took Xander Willis two pitches to wrap the game up. He hit a 2-run homerun that made the score 13-3, meaning that the run rule was in effect.

Gehrig Tenhumberg pitched a complete game for Oakland City. In seven innings he gave up four hits and three runs (all earned), while walking two and striking out five.

There are three teams left in the tournament. On Monday at 10:00 AM EST, Midway and Shawnee State will face off for a spot in the championship game versus Oakland City. This game will take place 45 minutes after game one of the day is completed, estimated at 1:30 PM EST. The if-necessary game would follow this afternoon game.
