Box Score Oakland City, IN - The Oakland City University women's basketball team closed out their 2019-20 season by hosting the Chargers of Southeastern Baptist College, out of Laurel, Mississippi, for the second day in a row. The Oaks fought back from a halftime deficit of 41-37 to win 78-71.
Kiare Young capped off her sophomore season with a game high 20 point effort to leave the Oaks, followed by classmate
Reanne Kietlinski, who tallied 16.
Xerena Tompkins ended her junior year with a 12 point, nine rebound, three block game, while freshman
Malia Schmittler and
Laurin Bentley each grabbed team highs of 11 rebounds.
The Chargers were led by a trio of players, Kobie Wesley, Tyra Conerly, and Deseree Moore, who each scored 18 points. Rashida Cheddick led Southeastern Baptist College in rebounding, hauling in a game high 14 missed shots.
As a team, OCU shot 26-71 (36.6%) from the field, including 8-24 (33.3%) from beyond the arc. SBC connected on 28-79 (35.4%) of their shot attempts, going 7-19 (36.8%) from three point range. The Oaks made 18-31 (58.1%) from the free throw line, compared to 8-16 (50.0%) for the visiting Chargers.
For the game, the Oaks held a 57-49 rebounding advantage, including a 21-19 edge on the offensive glass. OCU handed out 21 assists, compared to 15 for the chargers, while each team committed 16 turnovers.
The Lady Oaks finished the season with a record of 8-14, falling one win short of qualifying for the NCCAA Mid-East Regional tournament, where they finished as region runner-up last season.
