The Mighty Oaks opened their season tonight against the Warriors of Appalachian Bible College, turning a 47-39 halftime lead into a 100-65 victory.
Beau Hefner, a sophomore transfer from Ohio State University-Lima, posted a team high 20 points, on 7-11 shooting, including 6-10 from three point range. Jarod McHugh came off the bench to score 17, followed by 15 points and eight rebounds from freshman Kase Robinson. Freshman Nathaniel Schmittler and sophomore transfer Austin Robertson each notched 13 points, while Mitch Frederick came off the bench to tally 10 points, while leading the game in rebounds with 13, and assists with seven assists. Schmittler also had a double-double, hauling in 10 missed shots, while Robertson grabbed nine, and Robinson eight.
The Warriors had three players in double-digits, led by the 24 point effort of Jonathan Easter, who made 8-20 from three point range. Eric Miller added 17, while Kenyon Meece chipped in with 12. Caleb Chapman scored nine points while grabbing a team best nine rebounds.
For the game, OCU shot 38-69 (55.1%) from the field, including 12-28 (42.9%) from beyond the arc. ABC made 23-65 (35.4%) of their shot attempts, connecting on 18-50 (36.0%) from downtown. The Oaks were 12-14 (85.7%) from the foul line, compared to 1-2 (50.0%) for the visiting Warriors.
OCU held a 47-27 rebounding advantage, including a 17-12 edge on the offensive glass.
The Oaks handed out 25 assists while committing six turnovers, compared to 14 and 11 for the visitors. Oakland City came up with eight steals and three blocks, while Appalachian Bible had five thefts, and led the scoring in the paint 50-10, as well as a 34-0 edge in bench points.
The Oaks have a quick turnaround, as they host Earlham College in the Johnson Center, tomorrow at 3:00 pm.
