Box Score Evansville, IN – On a windy and rainy Saturday, the Mighty Oaks women's soccer team took on the University of Rio Grande in the quarterfinals of the River States Conference Tournament. Due to the weather and field conditions, the game was played on the Goebel Soccer Complex in Evansville, Indiana.
The match started off very hot for the Lady Oaks, the ball was in possession of the home squad for the majority of the first half. After five shots on goal, the sixth attempt was successful. In the nineteenth minute,
Rhiannon O'Looney found the net after an assist by
Alana Doherty.
Oakland City stayed in charge the entire first half and did not give the Red Storm of Rio Grande University a chance to make any shots on goal.
In the second half, the momentum changed. Rio Grande's first shot on goal was successful, Emma Hinkle evened the score at 1-1. After this Rio Grande was able to fire one more shot on goal, while the Lady Oaks shot on goal six times in the second half. None of the Oakland City shots resulted in a goal, therefore overtime was needed to decide a winner in this quarterfinal of the River States Conference Tournament.
The Mighty Oaks shot on goal twice in the first overtime while the defense prevented the Red Storm from getting any attempts of scoring. The score was still tied at 1-1 after the first half of overtime. In the second ten-minute half of the overtime, Oakland City was not able to get close to scoring. In minute 103 of the game, Cloe Johnson scored the 2-1 in favor of Rio Grande University. This was only the fourth shot on goal for the visitors from Ohio, versus sixteen shots from the home squad.
An unfortunate loss for the Mighty Oaks, who had several chances of taking the lead. With this loss, Oakland City is no longer in contention for the River States Conference Championship. Rio Grande moves on and faces Point Park University in the semifinals next week. The Lady Oaks of coach
