When Hugh was a first grader, he attended his first basketball game at Freelandville High School with his Dad. “I don’t know why we went, because he wasn’t a basketball fan. But I was fascinated by the crowd, the players and the coaches. I was engulfed by it.”

That was the beginning of Hugh’s dream to become a coach. He achieved that dream and so many more, as, through the years, he became a recognized authority on Indiana basketball history.

He taught and coached in the South Knox High School near Vincennes, Indiana, for 39 years. While working his way up the ladder to varsity coach, he served as assistant coach to two Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Coaches, Sam Alford and Joe Todrank, who remain friends today.

Schaefer is held in high regard by the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle, Indiana. He has served in various committee roles there and has been instrumental in nominating and guiding numerous former stars to be inducted into this greatest hall of fame.

Recognized as one of the greatest basketball scouts, Schaefer is considered a top strategist of the game of basketball at the high school level. He has been honored with numerous awards and inductions into other organization’s halls of fame.

He has amassed an amazing collection of Indiana basketball history that is a lasting tribute to a man who poured his heart into the sport.
